National Treasures and Grand Dreams

(Half day trip)

Discover why Brantford is “The Telephone City” with a visit to the Bell Homestead National Historic Site, residence of Alexander Graham Bell.  Here in 1874, Alexander Graham Bell changed the world of communications forever with his invention of the telephone.  You may wish to enjoy a wonderful lunch at the Olde School Restaurant, where the queen herself dined in 1997.  After lunch, visit the Myrtleville House Museum, the 1837 farmstead that was home to five generations for the Good’s; one of Brantford’s earliest first-European families, and the childhood home of W.G. Good, the co-founder of the United Farmers Movement in Canada.  Next, visit the birthplace and childhood home of Adelaide Hunter Hoodless, founder of the Women’s Institute movement.  You are sure to treasure the wondrous dreams of many famous people who used to reside along the Grand River.

Edibles and Collectibles

Begin your tour with lunch at East Side Mario’s, located at the Brantford Commons. After lunch, travel to the little town of Paris and visit Mary Maxim – the home of Canada’s favourite craft and retail outlet. Your last stop is one you won’t want to miss! Visit one of the only Pewtersmiths in Ontario at Robert Hall Originals in St. George and make your own necklace out of semi-precious stone beads (cost based on items selected).

Scenic Grand River Tour

This guided paddle follows the historical route of the valley. It starts at Grand Experience’s Canoe & Kayak, located along the Grand River in Paris. The first leg of the paddle drifts into the famous artist snapshot of Paris, then passes the largest black walnut tree in Canada. The following is a list of what you will see and do on this trip: see natural conglomerate rock, drink from cool springs, run the splashing “Big Bloop,” visit a gypsum mine from the 1830’s, hike to the lookout on the Black Walnut Trail, hear the history of the forgotten Neutral Tribe, pass the largest blue-heron rookery, visit the coldest creek in Southern Ontario, picnic on Sarah’s Island, see the remains of an 1800 corduroy road, paddle the quiet stillness, see a red-tail hawk nest and the home of a bank beaver, finally, you will then paddle to our riverside site at Brant Conservation Area. Make the Journey by 12-person Voyageur Canoe, regular canoe, or kayak; and our expert guides will be sure to make it a Grand Experience. (3-hour hike/paddle).
You will then be shuttled back up river to Paris, coined the Prettiest Town in Ontario, where you can tour the riverside shops and boutiques, enjoy a latte in one of cafes overlooking the Grand, or dine at one of many fine restaurants.
